Story Time
Deborah
Prophetess, Judge, and Leader
Deborah
loved sitting in her favorite spot under a palm on a
hill. Oh the sun felt warm and comforting as a gentle
breeze filled the brisk lovely day. Here away from the
hustle and bustle of daily life she could pray to the
Lord and think of God and His words to her.
"Deborah,
I have called you to be a Judge in Israel, rule and
counsel my people with My Love" He would say.
"How
will I do this my Lord?" She asked.
She
felt the loving Presence of the Lord as He answered
"I will guide you and give you great victory in
My Name".
Little
did she know that her favorite spot under this cool
green Palm would become the place she would speak the
word of the Lord to people from all over the land.
Soon
after Deborah became the Judge of Israel . She held
court under her Palm Tree between Ramah and Bethel in
the hills of Ephraim.
People
would come with many situations and problems seeking
justice and Deborah would counsel them with the Wisdom
the Lord gave her.
One
day Deborah had a message from the Lord for Barak. So
she sent for Barak and said to him, "It has become
clear that GOD, the God of Israel, commands you:
"Go
to Mount Tabor and prepare for battle. Take ten companies
of soldiers from Naphtali and Zebulun. I'll take care
of getting Sisera, the leader of Jabin's army, to the
Kishon River with all his chariots and troops. And I'll
make sure you win the battle."
For
it was God’s will that Jabin king of Canaan be
defeated before the People of Israel.
Barak
said, "If you go with me, I'll go. But if you don't
go with me, I won't go."
She
said, "Of course I'll go with you." For those
who deliver God’s message must be willing to help
those who receive the message. "But GOD will use
a woman's hand to take care of Sisera." Now Deborah
was not speaking of herself, but of another woman the
Lord would use.
Deborah
got ready quickly, and went with Barak to Kedesh.
Soon
Barak called Zebulun and Naphtali together at Kedesh.
Ten companies of men followed him. And Deborah was right
by his side.
Deborah
who then heard another message from the Lord saying
the time is at hand, said to Barak, "Charge! This
very day GOD has given you victory over Sisera. Isn't
GOD marching before you?"
Barak
believed God was with him so he courageously charged
down the slopes of Mount Tabor, his ten companies following.
Then
GOD routed Sisera--all those chariots, all those troops!-before
Barak winning the battle for Israel. The triumph was
then complete with the help of a woman who defeated
Sisera in a tent where he was seeking refuge.
Obedience
to the word of God caused Israel to win!
Then
Deborah joyfully sang a special victory song to God
that told the story of God’s call to her and His
help for Israel! She lifted her hands to heaven worshipping
and praising Adonai--the Lord God who is One, the God
of Israel!
The
Lord spoke again to Deborah: "Well done my daughter,
your faith and trust in Me, and boldness for My Word
have brought much glory to my Name!"
Deborah
smiled, laughed and danced about as the warmth, light
and love of His Presence surrounded her . She began
to sing and shout: "Sing to the Lord, sing joyfully
for His Name is great, and greatly to be praised!"
